14/07/2008I see the Govt have announced the House of Lords reform today, I still am lacking in detail since I caught the tail end of newsnight. I'm glad that they are keeping the bishops, though there will only be 20-30 ish out of 400. Did they have to reduce the number of members from 600 odd to 400 odd? And the rest of them they would be fully elected for up to three sittings of parliament... now I have to say with the raft of terribly drafted legislation this govt has produced, the house of lords have had an exceptionally valuable job to do lately, and my main concern with any changes to the current set up is that if it ends up being entirely elected we may end up with a partisan based house which would be bad especially if both houses had the same color party holding the majority..Whilst life piers may not be justified in any sort of democratic way, they did keep some sort of sense and normality to the scrutinising of the legislation that came from the other place. The good news is inevitability will see this legislation never coming to pass. |
