I agree that GSTQ is a terribly uninspiring piece of music. I think we probably could find something that we in Engalnd could claim as "our" anthem. However, I do not believe that one has to be right wing to believe this. An argumane for another day, perhaps...

The *composer* of the musical setting for Blake's words, "Jerusalem" was not Elgar. It was Hubert Parry who composed the piece specifically for a meeting promoting women's sufferage in 1916. In 1922, Elgar scored the orchestral version that is now so familiar to us all. It seems that, having heard this version, George V suggested it should replace "God Save the King" as the national anthem!
